Predator Trapping Tips with Ray Milligan

Here is are some tips from Ray Milligan out of the 1985/86 MTP catalog:

I’ve asked Ray Milligan to write a few words on the problems and solutions of coyote and cat trapping for my catalog. Although I’ve enjoyed catching these 2 critters in the north country and will be venturing to the southwest later this winter to nab some in the desert, I can’t hold a candle to this man’s knowledge on coyotes and cats.

“Ray’s Tips for Tim’s Customers”

Many fox trappers, when they work on coyotes for the first time, encounter many “diggers.” This perpetuates the myths that surround coyote trapping. There are three paramount rules when trapping coyotes.

(1) If you use trap bed dirt large enough to fit your trap. If your bed is too large, you’ll need to pack dirt in the area outside of the trap jaws. The loose, sifted dirt outside the trap jaws will often cause the coyote to dig your trap bed.

(2) A trap that is bedded loosely will also cause digging. When you figure that a 25 pound coyote carries 15 pounds or more of his weight on his front feet, the need for a very solidly bedded trap is obvious.

(3) Trap placement can vary with the size of the coyotes you’re working. Northern, Mountain and Midwest coyotes are best set with a pan placement 8 inches back and 2 inches off to either side from your hole or attractor.I like a pan placement of 6 inches back and off-set 1 inch.A good trap for all-around coyote trapping is a #2 Northwoods with off-set jaws. This trap is also good for winter fox and bobcat trapping. For bobcat trapping you’ll want to use fresh “put-up” fresh preserved bait. Wild or domestic calf and fawn are my favorites. As for lure, buy one that has a dominant smell of beaver castor or skunk essence, as those two smells are the most attractive to felines. You’ll also want a bobcat gland lure for those territorial toms. Thanks for listening and have a good season.   - Ray
